About This Spot

Stepping into The Garden Coffee House feels like slipping into a quietly spirited nook nestled in the heart of Hexham. With its eclectic touches—from vintage 70s furniture to the gentle hum of conversation—the cafe carries a warm, lived-in charm that invites both lingering mornings and unhurried afternoons. It’s a place where time softens at the edges, and the bustle outside seems to slow, replaced by the soothing rhythm of friendly greetings and clinking cups.

The pace here is calm but lively in its own understated way, shaped by locals chatting over cappuccinos, visitors discovering hidden corners in the sunny courtyard, and the occasional tail-wagging canine friend adding to the relaxed vibe. The atmosphere is unpretentious but thoughtfully curated, blending a bohemian spirit with the comfort of genuine hospitality. Whether you settle by a sunlit window or take to the outdoor space surrounded by historic walls, the setting feels both grounded and a little whimsical.

At the heart of the experience is the thoughtfully crafted menu, where familiar favorites take on a fresh twist. There’s an inviting balance between comforting staples like a well-pulled double espresso or velvety flat white, and surprising delights—think spiced chai porridge or a loaded sourdough crowned with creamy smashed avocado and feta. The offerings capture the joy of a leisurely brunch or a mindful pause, inviting you to savor not just the flavors but the moments shared over great coffee and thoughtfully prepared plates.

The Garden Coffee House is more than just a stop for caffeine; it’s a meeting place where community and curiosity coexist. From early morning yoga sessions paired with breakfast to tarot readings over lunch, it’s clear this is a spot that thrives on connection and creativity. The warmth of the team adds a personal touch, making first-time visitors feel like friends, and regulars like part of a quietly unfolding story.

A garden of delights planted in the heart of Hexham overlooked by the ancient gaol house. We visited the Garden Coffee Shop on a warm Monday afternoon with a mind to sit outside and soak up some of the late afternoon sunshine. The cafe was moderately busy, with plenty of seats and tables available inside and out. The outdoor space, in a courtyard surrounded by a wondefully varied size and shape of buildings, really catches the sun and it was lovely to relax outdoors and unwind with cold drinks and hot food. We enjoyed a pastrami bagel and pizza toastie with milkshakes in an unhurried and casual environment. The Garden Coffee Shop feels more modern and attracts a younger set of visitors than some cafes in Tynedale and it had a very nice vibe.

This little coffee shop has been around for a while in Hexham with various owners. I went recently and was blown away by the tasty choices for food and drink. I was a bit spoilt for choice as it has offers beyond the usual ‘boring cafe style food’. I had two of the specials at the time - the honey whipped iced coffee (so good I think it needs to be a permanent feature on their daily menu) I’ve never had such a delicious flavoured coffee. I also had the Thai butternut squash and coconut soup. Again, this was so delicious and tasty. Not too spicy but a little Thai style kick and plenty of flavour. I then had eyes bigger than my stomach as spotted the Apricot flapjack on the counter and couldn’t resist. This was buttery, and yummy and the apricot added something sweet and different. The cafe itself is looking a little tired (sorry to say) HOWEVER, DO NOT let this put you off. It’s got a wonderful outdoor space and the food/drink DEFINITELY does the talking for this little hidden gem of a place. Service was cheerful, efficient and polite. Well worthy of a visit.

I love an independent coffee shop and the Garden Coffee House is a real gem. Grant and his team are friendly and welcoming, the cappuccinos are excellent, and the avocado and feta on sourdough is fantastic. They also host fun, unique events—we’ve done early morning yoga with breakfast and can't wait for tarot card readings over lunch. So much caffeinated fun!

We first visited this delightful café a few weeks ago on a day trip from SW Scotland, and returned today. Coffee and a scone (almond and cherry) today, both delicious! Friendly and effective team, led by Grant, warm atmosphere, relaxed, great vibe. I only wish we lived closer, but we will be back!

Saw this place on social media and had to try their toasties. We had the pizza toastie and the honey ham toastie with fries. They were delicious, super cheesey, and tasty. We sat outside, both inside and outside had a really nice atmosphere and the staff were very friendly.

Food in here is top class cafe food. Big, serious toasties, hearty, spicy, no nonsense soup, and fries that you'd swap the worst member of your family for without hesitation. It's not a big place, you might have to wait a bit, but you'll be happy enough to, unless you're parked in one of the bays in the local car park that give you the anxiety about getting back. Staff are friendly and helpful. Coffee decent. Decor just this side of bonkers. Yeah, 100% recommend.
